Gestures and Presidential presence

As a communication consultant I’m often asked to rate Presidential candidates and their communications styles. I use the term “Presidential presence” when describing candidates’ vocal behavior, body language, and overall delivery. WCCO reporter Heather Brown asked for my professional opinion specifically about hand gestures during the GOP debates.

Gestures must emphasize the point one intends to make. There is a fine line between reinforcing a message and distracting from it when using gestures, as we saw with some of the candidates. Gestures also vary depending on the culture of the audience and the geographic area. Midwesterners tend to be more subdued in their body language, while a New Yorker might be much more active physically during delivery.

It’s important for everyone, especially those vying for our nation’s highest office, to match body movement to the message and the audience. Keeping gestures appropriate and removing any nervous physical tics can do wonders to  deliver any message in an impactful way and command the audience with your powerful presence.
