To help us celebrate our Sixth Anniversary, Sherry Roberts shares her writing insight as February’s Guest Blogger. Sherry owns The Roberts Group Editorial and Design, which helps businesses deliver their message in plain but powerful language.
In 2010, President Barack Obama signed the Plain Writing Act, requiring federal agencies to use “clear government communication that the public can understand and use.”
Smart businesses emphasize plain language, too. It saves time and money because it makes information-finding faster. Plain language is persuasive. No one buys what is hard to understand. Do your customers leave your Web site saying, “I still don’t know what they do?”
Writing clearly and simplifying syntax is not dumbing down language. It illuminates your message and gives it power. A few tips: 1) write to express, not impress 2) use plain, jargon-free language 3) focus on clarity and getting to the point 4) think of concise sentences and short paragraphs.
Join the plain language movement. It’s good customer service.

We kick off 2012′s Guest Blog feature with Pamela Muldoon, Chief Content Officer of Next Stage Media Group. Pamela’s company is a new media and marketing firm; she helps clients make sure their content marketing communicates powerfully.
You have three seconds to get the attention of the reader, listener, viewer. It’s imperative that every time you share content—whether online or offline, in a traditional strategy or digital platform—you always put your best voice forward. A couple things to consider when implementing any content strategy:
Your Brand: If your brand was a character from a movie, who would it be? Would your brand be like George S. Patton: authoritative, direct, strong? Or is your brand like Maria Von Trapp: bubbly, positive, caring? Understanding how your brand acts will set the tone for the delivery of your message. This is the foundation for how you will prepare the voice of your brand in writing, audio, and video.
Your Audience: The first rule of marketing is it’s not about you; it’s about your target audience. What are the emotions you want your audience to feel when they see, hear, or view your message? What do they really need to know about your industry that will make their lives better? By caring more about what your audience needs and wants than your competition does, you will position yourself as the thought leader in your industry.
Provide quality content for your audience. Help them with their problems and show them how your company, your brand can improve their current situation. Do this with personality of brand, and you will put your best voice forward…always.
