The exclamation point. It’s not a bad piece of punctuation. Lately though, the point is getting exclaimed a little too much. I notice overuse of the exclamation point in e-mails, Tweets, and other social media updates.
Do yourself and this pithy little piece of punctuation a favor—remember less is more.
Here’s to your WOW!

Dale Carnegie once said a person’s name is the sweetest sound to their ears. That’s one reason it’s important you use people’s names during this holiday season and beyond. Most importantly, get names right.
If you know you’ve met someone and are having trouble remembering the name, start by re-introducing yourself. When that happens to me, I hope they will re-introduce themselves. Once they give you the name, say it a few times as you speak with them. That will help you remember.
By all means, pronounce it correctly. I had a conversation with a client recently who has a pretty simple name once you learn to pronounce it. Unfortunately, no matter how often she corrects others, many mis-pronounce it—often her own colleagues. Attention to this detail is a sign of respect you give your clients, colleagues, and even new friends. Once you’ve learned these names, use them often. Make someone’s ears happy and just watch the benefits that come your way.
I’ve noticed some issues with people’s out of office replies lately. My sense is people create these messages to help their clients, customers, and colleagues. You certainly don’t want them to hurt you, however.
Whether on your voice mail greeting or your e-mail, be sure to keep on top of the dates and wording for these messages.
